Banana Island, or Pulau Pisang is found about 1.5km off the mainland north of Krui. You can see the island, and the right hander on the way north to Jenny’s and Jimmies. Banana Island is the definition of paradise, with a pristine white sand beach on the protected side of the island with crystal clear, azure blue water great for hanging out on the beach and a left and a right hander wrapping around either side. It can be a great day out, and is best to start early to make the most of your day on the island.

About Banana Island Left

Banana Island is a wave magnet left that wraps around the western point of the island, and can break for over 100m over a very shallow coral platform where dry boil ups can haunt the line up on the lower tides. As it stands up and peels down the reef the sections can fall in front of you forcing you to pull out through the back of the wave to avoid the reef. A fickle spot. There is another left further inside breaking underneath the small island sticking out of the reef, this wave can get super heavy but is plagued by a shallow shutdown end section.

Best Conditions for Banana Island Left

Banana Island Left breaks best with a high tide and a swell with more south in it causing it to refract around the island. This wave draws in all available swell, and will rarely be under head high so choose to check out this spot on smaller to mid size swells.

it is offshore in the dry season SE trade winds.

Getting in and out at Banana Island Left

Typically you will be dropped of by boat here, so a simple jump and paddle is all that is needed.
Coming in there is a small ill-defined channel at the end of the wave, but make sure you don’t miss it as the reef to the east is a shallow shore dump onto the coral. This channel can also be used to paddle out if the boat drops you off on the island.

Getting to Banana Island Left

Banana Island is boat access only. It is best to organise a boat in Krui, your accommodation should be able to put you the right direction to someone who can get you over there. Once on the island, make your way through the village to the north from the old abandoned jetty, following the path that leads over the hill.

Hazards to look out for at Banana Island Left

Sharp, shallow reef is a hazard when surfing here. If something goes wrong you are a while away from any medical help so take care. Be careful when getting off and on the boat on the island as there is no usable jetty and the boats are landed on the steep beach, and the surging swells can push the boat around without notice. best to listen to the captain when getting off and on.
