Overview of Location and Area

Last Rites is located on the southern coast of Simeulue, a short boat ride from the main surf lodges. It sits just around the corner from heavier setups like Tea Bags and Dylan’s, but pushes the danger factor even further. This right-hand slab is notorious for its hollow, heavy drops and ultra-shallow reef. It’s not an everyday wave — it needs proper swell and perfect tide, but when it’s on, it’s one of the most intense rides in all of Sumatra.

About Last Rites

Last Rites is a mutant right-hand slab, breaking fast and hard over a sharp coral shelf. It jacks abruptly, often from deep water, and throws out a thick, wide-open barrel straight from the ledge. The drop is near-vertical and often backdoor — this is a wave for chargers, not cruisers. It’s short, brutal, and incredibly shallow. Make the drop and you’re slotted — misjudge it and you’re going headfirst into coral. Most sessions here are quick, calculated, and leave your heart thumping.

Best Conditions for Last Rites

This wave needs a solid SW swell, ideally 6–10 ft or bigger, with a good period (15s+). It’s tide-sensitive — mid to high tide only, or you’re flirting with dry reef. Winds must be light from the east or northeast. It doesn’t break often, but when the forecast lines up, local guides know to strike fast. Late morning or early afternoon often brings the best combo of wind and tide.

Getting in and out at Last Rites

Boat access only. The lineup sits just off a jagged reef ledge with no safe paddle entry from land. There’s a defined channel, but the wave itself breaks right on the shelf, and getting caught inside can be brutal. Paddling in after a wipeout is sketchy — wear booties and bring a helmet if you’re unsure. Most sessions are quick — a few waves, and you’re done. It’s one of those waves where one make is worth a whole season.

Getting to Last Rites

Fly to Sinabang (Simeulue) via Medan, then head to a surf camp near Busung or Labuan Bakti. Most surfers staying at Mahi-Mahi Surf Resort or nearby hire a boat or organize a strike mission when the conditions line up. There’s no signage, no facilities, and no margin for error — this is Indo slab hunting in its rawest form.

Hazards to look out for at Last Rites

This spot has a long injury list. Shallow reef, powerful lip, unpredictable bounce — wipeouts here can mean deep cuts, dislocated shoulders, or worse. If you’re not a confident tube rider in heavy waves, this isn’t the spot to “give it a try.” You’ll also want to bring your own med kit, and ideally a buddy watching from the boat. One bad call here can end a trip.
