Overview of Location and Area

A-Frame sits just off the beach in Lhoknga, roughly 25–30 minutes west of Banda Aceh. The area is one of the few mainland surf zones in Aceh with regular swell and a small surf community. There are basic losmens, warungs, and local chargers in the water, especially when the swell kicks up. A-Frame is well named — it’s a proper split-peak reef that delivers both ways when it’s on.

About A-Frame

A-Frame is a versatile reef pass that throws up both a rippable right and a whackable left, depending on tide and swell angle. The left is usually the longer option with a wall that can get racey on the inside. The right is shorter but can bowl hard if the tide’s right.

It’s not slabby, but it has enough punch to keep things interesting, especially when it hits the head-high to overhead range. Local surfers use this spot for daily laps when it’s not maxing out elsewhere.

Best Conditions for A-Frame

Swell: SW to S, 3–8 ft, 12–16s period
Tide: Mid to high — too low and it gets sketchy on the inside
Wind: Light E or NE, glassy early mornings are best
Season: March to October, peak consistency during dry season trades

Getting in and out at A-Frame

Paddle out is easy from the sheltered beach in Lhoknga. Walk across sand and reef, time your sets, and paddle straight into the lineup. There’s a deep water channel next to the peak. Be aware of surgey water on big days — the reef shelf moves a lot of volume around, and the inside can shallow up fast.

Getting to A-Frame

Fly to Banda Aceh, rent a scooter or grab a local driver, and head west to Lhoknga. You’ll pass Lampuuk on the way. Stay in Lhoknga village — most surfers crash at one of the losmens or beachside warungs that cater to traveling Indo heads and the odd Euro who’s heard about it. No boat required, everything is land-based.

Hazards to look out for at A-Frame

Reef rash territory if you get caught inside on lower tides.
Mid-tide surges can create strange water movement — be alert during takeoff.
Occasional rips, especially during long-period south swells.
Shore theft risk — don’t leave valuables on the beach.
It’s Aceh — be culturally respectful: dress modestly on land, avoid booze or beach parties.
