Overview of Location and Area

Alu’s Rights is located on the southern tip of Simeulue Island, well away from the more popular zones near Dylans, The Peak, or Tea Bags. The area is still wild — thick jungle, open ocean, and very little tourism infrastructure. You’ll need a driver, a boat, or a serious sense of direction to even find the reef.

About Alu’s Rights

Fun wave that varies based on swell size, direction and tide. On the right swell angle and tide, it offers multiple barrel sections, but even when it’s not tubing, it’s fast, drivey, and has serious push. Not super long, but every section counts. The inside can get gnarly with dry coral heads on low tide. Higher tides offer are more intermediate friendly wave.

Think raw Mentawai-style reef power, without the boats or the crowd.

Best Conditions for Alu’s

Needs solid SW–SSW swell in the 4–10 ft range
Mid to high tide keeps it safer; too low and it gets sketchy
Best wind is E–NE, typically early dry season
March–October is the ideal window, with peak swell and morning glass

Getting in and out at Alu’s

Access is tricky — some surfers use a boat from nearby villages, others hike or 4×4 in, then paddle across reef. Paddle entry is via a narrow channel, but it’s tight and tide-dependent. The inside is sharp and dry on lower water, so time your exit well. Not a wave to wipe out on casually.

Getting to Alu’s Rights

Fly into Simeulue (Lasikin Airport) via Medan, then either:

Drive south for 2+ hours on rough roads, or
Arrange a local boat from the main surf areas to explore the coast
There are no surf camps or support here — it’s a full DIY mission. Bring food, water, boards, first aid, and reef gear. You’re not seeing another surfer unless you bring them.

Hazards to look out for at Alu’s
