Overview of Location and Area
The Peak, also known by its original name Jackals, is Simeulue’s most accessible and consistent wave, located directly in front of the main surf lodges near Labuang Bay on the southwest coast. If you’re staying at Mahi-Mahi Surf Resort, Aura Surf Resort, or any nearby camp, The Peak is your front yard. It breaks right off a deepwater reef with stunning backdrops of jungle and palm-fringed coastline, and works almost daily during the March–October swell window.
About The Peak (Jackals)
The Peak is a split-peak reef break, offering both a hollow right and a longer, more rippable left off the same takeoff zone. The right is punchy and can produce clean barrels on lower tides and solid swells. The left is generally softer, with open faces perfect for turns and longer rides. On a good day, both sides are firing, and the wave holds its shape through a variety of conditions.
It’s a wave you can surf multiple times a day — consistently good, user-friendly, and with just enough bite to keep things exciting.
Best Conditions for The Peak
The Peak works on almost any SW–WSW swell with 3–10 ft of energy. It’s super versatile — both sides break on all tides, but mid to high tide tends to be best for the left, while the right can barrel harder at lower tide. Easterly and northeasterly winds are offshore, and the reef can still deliver on semi-bumpy days, making it one of the most reliable surf zones in North Sumatra.
Getting in and out at The Peak
Paddle-out is straightforward — walk across the reef or enter from the sand beach at higher tide. There’s a deep channel, and you can choose your peak based on what’s working. Be mindful of the inside reef on the left if the tide drops out. Locals and camp staff are often in the water and happy to point you to the safest line-up zone.
Getting to The Peak
Fly to Sinabang Airport (Simeulue) via Medan. From there, it’s a 45-minute drive to the surf zone near Labuang Bay, where you’ll find a string of surf camps and homestays. Most surfers stay within walking distance of The Peak, making it ideal for multiple surfs a day. If there’s swell on the charts, this wave is usually the first to switch on.
Hazards to look out for at The Peak
The reef is fairly tame compared to heavier Indo setups, but still sharp enough to slice you if you fall wrong. The inside section on the left can get shallow at lower tide, especially if you chase the reform. Sea urchins are common near the reef edge. The biggest challenge can be crowd positioning, especially when both sides are working — keep your etiquette tight and be ready to share the peak.
