Overview of Location and Area
Lizards Nest is a wild, relatively unknown setup in the Banyak Islands—North Sumatra’s remote surf frontier. Like the name suggests, it’s raw and untamed, with a feeling of isolation that’s becoming harder to find in Indonesia. The surrounding zone is lush and wild, with towering palms and untouched jungle meeting the reef edge. You won’t find Wi-Fi or warungs here—just reef passes and boat-based lineups.
About Lizards Nest
Lizards Nest is a right-hand reef break that throws hard over shallow coral, with a steep takeoff and a fast, hollow section that grinds down the line. It’s a lesser-known spot even among Banyak regulars, often passed over for Cobras or Treasure Island—but when it’s on, it delivers some seriously photogenic waves.
The setup is technical. You’ll need to read the shifting peaks, commit on the drop, and pull in quickly—otherwise the lip will find you. It’s not a long wave, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in intensity. Think slabby sections with the potential for drainers on the right tide and swell combo.
Best Conditions for Lizards Nest
Swell Direction: Solid south to southwest swell is key—needs energy to properly wrap in and ignite the reef.
Swell Size: Ideal range is 4–10 ft. Too small and it’s mushy; too big and it becomes a thick, pitching beast.
Tides: Mid tide tends to give the best shape—low tide is razor sharp, high tide can soften the barrel too much.
Wind: Like most of the Banyaks, easterly to northeasterly winds are best for clean, offshore faces.
Getting in and out at Lizards Nest
This is a boat-only spot. There’s no easy paddle-in from land—it breaks in front of reef shelf with no beach in sight. Most charters will drop you just outside the impact zone and pick you up in the channel post-wave.
The reef is sharp and shallow near the takeoff, so staying on your feet—or your board—is the goal. You don’t want to be caught inside here. Keep your exits clean and your duck dives sharp.
Getting to Lizards Nest
Access is via surf charter or a land camp offering boat trips across the Banyak Islands. Typical route:
Fly into Medan (Kuala Namu International Airport)
Travel overland to Singkil, or connect to Nias depending on your charter’s origin
Boat charter to the Banyaks, where you’ll surf multiple breaks including Lizards Nest depending on conditions
Because of its lesser-known status, Lizards Nest often offers empty sessions—especially on trips where crews are chasing bigger names. Keep an eye on the charts and don’t skip it if the elements line up.
Hazards to Look Out for at Lizards Nest
Sharp Reef: The reef here is sharper and more exposed than at some of the other Banyaks breaks. Booties aren’t a bad idea if you’re planning to push your limits.
Heavy Lip: The takeoff section throws fast and can clamp down hard—this wave isn’t playful unless it’s small.
Shifty Peaks: Conditions can change rapidly with the tide and swell angle—positioning is critical.
Isolation: Like all remote spots, injuries here are not easily dealt with—go hard, but go smart.
Lizards Nest is for those who like their rights with a little danger and a lot of punch. It’s not a wave for lazy surfing or second guessing—if you’re hunting slabs with no one around, this is your reef.
