The island’s two main surf areas, Kuta Lombok and Desert Point, cater to different seasons and skill levels, making Lombok a versatile destination for surfers of all backgrounds.

Kuta Lombok Area

Kuta Lombok is the heart of Lombok’s surf scene and features a wide range of waves within easy reach. The area has become popular for its chill, bohemian atmosphere, and the variety of surf options caters to all levels.

• Grupuk: The main surf spot in Kuta Lombok, Grupuk has multiple peaks that break over a reef. Known for its forgiving waves and mellow vibe, Grupuk is a popular choice for beginners and intermediates. The waves here range from gentle rolling swells to larger, more challenging sections on bigger days, making it ideal for progressing surfers.
• Ekas: Located southeast of Kuta Lombok, Ekas features both a right and left-hand reef break. • Desert Point: Known for its long, left-hand barrels, Desert Point is a wave that breaks over shallow reef and produces some of the best barrels in the world. On good days, Desert Point offers a long, perfect tube that can hold for hundreds of meters, giving experienced surfers an unforgettable ride. However, this wave is best suited for advanced surfers due to its powerful sections, shallow reef, and the technical skill required to make the drop and ride the tube.

Desert Point works best in the dry season, with southeast trade winds blowing offshore. It’s an extremely fickle wave that needs a combination of the right swell, tide, and winds to work perfectly, but when it’s on, it’s an experience of a lifetime for advanced surfers.

Surfing Ability For South Sumatra

South Sumatra offers something for every level. Intermediates and up will love the variety of waves in the region, and although it’s not at the same level as Bali, there are some options for beginners in the protected bay of Krui when the swells are small.

Expert surfers will love the challenge of Way Jambu, Banana Island, Honeysmacks and Jimmies Right, especially during the dry season when long period swells and offshore winds are the norm.

Intermediates will have a lot of fun on the long walls of Ujung Bocur, or when the swell gets up the various options in the bay at Krui.

Wet Season (November – March): The wet season brings cleaner conditions to the Kuta Lombok area, with lighter winds and consistent swells from the southwest. This is the best time to surf Grupuk and other nearby spots, as the winds favor these breaks.
Dry Season (April – October): The dry season brings offshore southeast trade winds, which are ideal for Desert Point and other breaks along the southwest coast. This season sees consistent south swells lighting up Desert Point, making it the best time to experience this iconic wave.

How to Get to Lombok

Reaching Lombok is straightforward, with daily flights from major Indonesian cities and easy access to the main surf spots once you’re on the island.

1. Fly to Lombok International Airport (LOP): Lombok’s main airport receives domestic flights from Jakarta, Bali, and other major Indonesian cities, as well as limited international flights. From the airport, Kuta Lombok is about a 30-minute drive, while Desert Point requires a 2-3 hour drive across the island.
2. Ferry from Bali: A public ferry runs regularly between Bali and Lombok, taking around 4-6 hours to reach Lembar, the main port. Fast ferries and private charters are also available for a quicker crossing, though these options are more costly.

Once in Lombok, most surf spots in Kuta Lombok are accessible by scooter, and local drivers can take you to Desert Point or other remote breaks if needed.
