Roxies, also known as “Roxy’s Right” or “Coldsprings,” is located on the western coastline in a small bay in the Malakopa area of South Pagai (Pagai Selatan) Island, part of the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. This remote region is characterized by lush tropical landscapes and pristine beaches, offering surfers a secluded environment away from the more crowded breaks in the northern Mentawais. ​

About Roxies

Roxies is a rippable right-hand reef break that is enjoyed by surfers of various levels. The wave offers long, powerful walls with occasional barrel sections, making it suitable for both carving maneuvers and tube riding. On smaller days, Roxies is a top-turn machine, providing playful sections ideal for practicing maneuvers. As the swell increases, the wave transforms, offering beautiful barrels in a dream-like fashion. Many traveling surfers have compared this wave to a “Macas in reverse” due to its synchronized shape and perfect rhythm. ​

Best Conditions for Roxies

Swell Size: Optimal between 4 to 12 feet.​
Swell Direction: West to southwest swells provide the best conditions.​
Wind: Easterly to northeasterly winds offer ideal offshore conditions at Roxies.​
Tide: Performs best during mid to high tides, as lower tides can expose more of the reef, affecting wave quality.​
Season: The prime surfing season is from April to October, aligning with the dry season when consistent swells and favorable winds are prevalent.​

Getting in and out at Roxies

Accessing the lineup at Roxies can be achieved through a keyhole in the reef at the very end of the wave or by paddling out from the beach at the start of the point, avoiding the reef completely. Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Reef cuts and infections are a big deal and require immediate attention to avoid health problems. ​

Getting to Roxies

Reaching Roxies involves traveling to the Mentawai Islands, typically starting with a flight into Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang, West Sumatra. From Padang, surfers can arrange for a ferry or speedboat to the Mentawais. Some surf charters and resorts offer direct transfers. Once in the Mentawais, access to specific surf spots like Roxies would likely require coordination with local surf camps or charter boats familiar with the area. Given the remote nature of the southern Mentawais, planning logistics with experienced operators is essential. ​

Shallow Reef: The wave breaks over a sharp, shallow coral reef, increasing the risk of cuts and injuries, especially during low tide.​
