Overview of Location and Area
Rockstar Point is a lesser-known right-hand reef break located just north of the main break at Lagundri Bay, near the village of Botohilitano. It’s accessible by scooter from Sorake and offers a refreshing alternative when the main point is overcrowded or not cooperating with wind/tide. The vibe here is relaxed, with open paddocks, quiet roads, and curious locals watching from the shoreline.
About Rockstar Point
Rockstar Point is a right-hand reef that throws up a rippable wall when the conditions are right. It’s shorter and less powerful than Sorake Right, but when the swell direction hits clean and the tide is mid-range, you can snag fun, fast rides with enough face to draw lines and link turns. On occasion, the wave throws a cheeky barrel off the takeoff. It can get sectiony, but with the right swell angle it’ll run for 3–4 solid maneuvers. While not as “perfect” as other Nias setups, the lower crowd and playful feel make it a solid backup plan.
Best Conditions for Rockstar Point
This spot works best on SW to SSW swell, ideally in the 4–8 ft range, paired with light E or SE wind. It’s tide-sensitive, favoring mid tides for the best balance of shape and depth. Too low and it runs shallow and unpredictable; too high and it can fatten out. It’s not as dependent on long-period energy as Lagundri, which means it can light up on smaller swells — great for intermediate surfers or tune-up days.
Getting in and out at Rockstar Point
Paddle out from the keyhole near the main headland — there’s a defined entry zone used by locals and visiting surfers. The reef isn’t super gnarly, but it has its moments, especially if you wipe out on the inside. Getting in is usually mellow if you pick your moment between sets. There’s often a little rip that helps you get out through the side channel.
Getting to Rockstar Point
From Sorake, Rockstar is just a 10–15 minute scooter ride along the coast. Most surf camps and local guides can point you there. There’s a small trail down from the main road, and you’ll likely be greeted by a few local kids or fishermen. No facilities on site — bring water and snacks if you’re staying a while. It’s a great little mission when you want a change from the main event.
Hazards to look out for at Rockstar Point
While not the heaviest reef in Nias, the inside section of Rockstar still has sharp coral heads and can go shallow fast on a draining tide. Watch for urchins in the impact zone and be wary of clean-up sets when the swell pulses. There’s usually no lifeguard or safety support here, so surf with a buddy. The biggest hazard might be underestimating how quick the wave can stand up on the takeoff when the swell direction shifts more south.
