Overview of No Kanduis

No Kanduis is an infamous left-hand reef break in the Mentawai Islands known for its sheer power and intensity. Often described as a “freight train” of a wave, No Kanduis is fast, thick, and unforgiving, demanding absolute commitment and experience from surfers who dare to tackle it. On its best days, No Kanduis offers perfectly shaped, barreling waves that run down the line with relentless speed and power, providing the ride of a lifetime for those with the courage and skill to handle it. However, with this reward comes the real risk of severe wipeouts, as the wave breaks over a shallow and sharp reef, making it one of the most challenging spots in the Mentawai.
No Kanduis performs best at high tide, which helps mitigate some of the dangers posed by the shallow reef. When the swell is 6 feet and above, the wave lines up beautifully, allowing skilled surfers to experience deep barrels. On smaller days, No Kanduis becomes more sectiony and loses some of its smooth flow, though it remains fast and can still deliver hollow sections. This spot is not for beginners or intermediate surfers—only advanced and expert surfers should attempt No Kanduis, especially on larger days when the stakes are high.

Best Conditions for No Kanduis

No Kanduis works best on a SW to W swell, with high tide providing essential depth over the reef. Light SE to E winds keep the face clean and allow the wave to barrel flawlessly down the line. Peak conditions are achieved during larger swells, when the wave has enough size to connect through the critical sections without closing out.

Getting in and out at No Kanduis

Access to No Kanduis is typically by boat. To reach the lineup, simply jump off near the takeoff zone, which saves energy for the wave itself. Be cautious at low tide, as the reef becomes extremely shallow and poses a high risk for injuries. High tide is highly recommended for entry and exit to minimize reef exposure.

Getting to No Kanduis

No Kanduis is a prominent break in the Mentawai Islands, and most surf charters and camps catering to advanced surfers include it in their itineraries. Located near several other high-quality breaks, No Kanduis is accessible by a short boat ride from nearby accommodations.

Hazards to look out for at No Kanduis

The primary hazards at No Kanduis are the powerful wave and shallow reef, which can lead to serious injuries on larger days. The wave’s speed and thickness make it difficult to control, so even experienced surfers should approach with caution. Low tide significantly increases the risk, as does attempting No Kanduis on a large swell without the necessary skill level.
