Overview of Location and Area

G-Land lies deep inside Grajagan Bay, on the edge of Alas Purwo National Park, East Java. Surrounded by jungle, wild monkeys, and virtually nothing else, the wave unloads over a massive reef shelf that bends swell into a series of world-class left-hand sections. It’s been a legendary Indo proving ground since the ‘70s, and it still packs serious punch when it’s on.

About G-Land

This is not one wave — it’s a multi-section left-hand reef that fires in different moods depending on swell, tide, and surfer preference. Here’s the breakdown:

Kongs: The outside peak. Softer, workable, good for size and warm-ups.
Money Trees: The main event. Fast, hollow walls that race for hundreds of meters across the reef. Barrel city on the right day.
Speedies: The inside zone. Tight, ledging barrels, shallow and slabby. Make it or get rinsed. Not for the faint-hearted.
Chickens/Jurassic: Even further out the back, rarely surfed except by bigger boards or tow crews.
It’s one of the longest, most technical left-handers on Earth, with sections that link for 300+ meters when the swell lines up. Barrel opportunities are everywhere, but so is dry reef.

Best Conditions for G-Land

Solid S–SW swell, 4–12+ ft, long period (14–18s)
Mid tide for Money Trees, higher tide for Speedies unless you’re hunting slabs
E–NE trade winds groom it to perfection
Peak season: May to October, with June–August being prime time

Getting in and out at G-Land

Access is either by fast boat from Bali (via Sanur), or overland via Banyuwangi and a long bumpy drive through the jungle. Once you’re there, paddle from the beach through a reef pass. Most surfers stay at one of the few surf camps right on the point. Inside sections get shallow — know where to kick out, or bring reef rash souvenirs.

Hazards to look out for at G-Land

Dry reef and ledging sections at low tide
Long hold-downs and heavy beatings at Speedies
Strong currents and wide sets
Wildlife (jellyfish, sea snakes, jungle monkeys)
Remote zone — there’s a medical post at camp, but serious injury means evacuation
G-Land is not a place you come to learn — it’s a wave you come to test yourself. If the swell’s there, this place can deliver the best wave of your life — or hold you down for the worst. Bring your A-game, and bring reef booties if you don’t plan to bounce barefoot off the coral.
