About Serangan

A real consistent swell magnet, and a surfers bread and butter in the wet season.

This wave breaks from waist-high to double overhead and in all swell directions, from low tide through to high tide and is offshore from N to W winds.

It offers a bunch of different shifting peaks, throwing up good sucky barrel opportunities on the lower tides and super fun rippable walls on the higher tides. The nature of this coral platform means that it can cope with a crowd, and it does get crowded, often with all levels.

When looking to the ocean far out to the left is a right and left peak, with the left being the best and offering long waves, and the right being shorter and ending in a closeout but can be uncrowded.

Right in front of the warungs is the main show, with random peaks coming and going with the tide. Choose a spot, take a ticket and wait for one to come to you, as the wave of the day can turn up anywhere at any time.

Just to the right of this is a right-hander of less quality, but on smaller days can offer a great option for beginners to hone their skills on the coral reef.

Getting in and out at Serangan

Access to the wave is to paddle straight out through the breaking waves anywhere in front of the warungs on high tides, and a walk across the reef on lower tides, beware of urchins in holes in the coral!

Coming back in is the same in reverse.

Getting to Serangan

Access this wave by driving over the causeway on Jalan Pulau Serangan, past the island’s rubbish tips. When at the end of the causeway stay right and pass through the security checkpoint, where you will have to pay a fee and exchange a form of ID for a numbered docket.

After that, veer left and find your way through the maze of dirt tracks that can get very slippery after the rains, to the warungs (eateries) on the beach. Leave your belongings locked up, or secure with one of the lovely ladies in the warungs. Plenty of massages and nic nacs for sale here. You won’t need to find the sellers, they will find you.

Hazards to look out for at Serangan

beware of the reef when low tide, there are urchins in the holes.

This place can get crowded with surfers of all levels so stay aware, and surf within your ability.
