Overview of Location and Area

Scar Reef is tucked into the rugged coastline of West Sumbawa, about 30mins north of Maluk. It’s a wave with a heavy rep among Indo regulars and for good reason: it’s raw, fast, and unapologetic. With only a few losmen and camps nearby, it still has that old Indo energy, roosters in the morning, reef rash by lunch.

About Scar Reef

This is a freight-train left over shallow reef that offers long, hollow walls and the kind of barrel section that separates the committed from the cautious. On the right tide and swell, it’s a machine  running for up to 150m with a couple of deep barrel sections and a lip that throws heavy.
Scar Reef doesn’t really offer a shoulder to safety-pump out of. You either pack the barrel and make it… or you’re doing reef-checks with your back. It’s been compared to a gnarlier Desert Point on a tighter reef.

Best Conditions for Scar Reef

Tide: The real key here. Mid to high tide gives you a proper window. Low tide turns it into a razor-sharp death trap.
Swell: Needs solid SW groundswell — the more west in it, the better the angle.
Wind: Light E to SE trades keep it clean. Mornings are usually glassy.
Season: Peak is May through September, but April and October can sneak in some gems with fewer people around.

It’s a long paddle from the beach so a boat trip with save you a lot of time. There’s a deep-water channel you can use for entry/exit, but mistime it and you’re on the shelf.

Remote location: You’re hours from proper medical help. Bring a solid first-aid kit and basic knowledge.
