Overview of Location and Area

Phantoms lies on the opposite corner of Scar Reef. It’s tucked in the same west Sumbawa surf circuit that includes Scar Reef, Little Bingin, and Super Suck, forming a tight cluster of reef breaks in a less travelled part of the surf world.

About Phantoms

Phantoms is a fast, punchy right hander with a short ride, no long walls here, but this wave delivers a compact section that sets up quick turns and a clean finish, ideal for pushing rail and tweaking your style. It doesn’t barrel like Scar or Super Suck it’s more of a technical snap break with playful energy.

Best Conditions for Phantoms

Swell: Picks up well on west swells in the 3–6 ft range.
Wind: East to southeast trades clean up the face especially in the dry season.
Tide: Mid to high tide softens the take-off and shapes the sections. Closeouts and crash zones spike on low tide.
Season: Prime window is April through October, when winds and swells align in West Sumbawa.

Getting In and Out at Phantoms

There’s a crew of local legends that hang at the beach in front of scars and offer boat trips, guidance and a friendly smile. It’s a long paddle from the beach so a boat trip with save you a lot of time.

Getting to Phantoms

Most surfers come overland from Lombok via ferry, then drive south about 1.5-2hours to Scar reef. Alternatively you can fly to the domestic airport Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport (SWQ) from there taxi to Scar reef is around 3hours+.

Hazards to Look Out For at Phantoms

Reef: Sharp and shallow—especially at lower tides.
Short rides: The section closes quick, so timing is everything.
Remote: Few facilities—bring what you need.
