Overview of Location and Area

Mawun Beach is a postcard-perfect bay located about 20 minutes west of Kuta Lombok, framed by grassy hills and deep blue water. The beach is popular for its serenity, white sand, and clean water, and is a favorite among swimmers and sunbathers — with an occasional bonus for surfers when a small-to-medium south swell sneaks into the bay.

About Mawun

Mawun is not a world-class wave, but it does offer a mellow right-hander off the eastern corner of the bay. When it’s working, it peels along the reef for a few turns, offering a fun and playful ride best suited for intermediate surfers. On smaller days, the wave is user-friendly; on a bigger swell, the reef gets shallow and the section can pitch.

Best Conditions for Mawun

Swell direction: SSW
Swell size: 2–6 ft
Wind: N (offshore)
Tide: Mid to high tide is best
Season: The wet season (Oct–April) is ideal, when north winds groom the south swell

Getting in and out at Mawun

The paddle-out is short, but the reef can be sharp at lower tides. Keep your entry and exit clear of the shallowest sections, especially during the dry season when the tide range increases. Best to watch it for a bit before jumping in. There’s minimal lifeguard presence, so use caution and surf with a buddy.

Getting to Mawun

From Kuta Lombok, follow the main coastal road west for about 20 minutes. Mawun is located between Tampah and Selong Belanak, with a small signposted turn-off down to the beach. You’ll need to pay a small fee for parking. Access is straightforward with a scooter or car.
