The Lakey Peak area is one of the best surf destinations in the world. With a handful of consistent world-class waves within only a few kilometres of each other, it’s easy to understand why. Cheap accommodation right on the beach and only a few hours from Bima airport makes it a must-see destination on your Indonesian surf trip.

About Lakey Pipe

Across the channel to the south of Lakey peak, Lakey Pipe offers perfect left-hand barrels over shallow reef. Typically a lot less crowded than Lakey Peak, but it can still attract a crowd on the tight take-off zone.

The wave wraps around the coral shelf offering the opportunity to back door the barrel and travel for a few seconds before it runs into the channel, where 1 turn or a cut back can be done to finish it off. Best on the mid tides, and often too shallow on the lows.

The inside section on the high tides offers a good place for advancing beginners to hone their skills, as the wave mellows out and give a short, fat left into the channel.

Best Conditions for Lakey Pipe

The extra wrap on Lakey Pipe compared to Lakey Peak means it can still offer clean waves when the trade winds come up from the south. The best conditions are head high to 1.5 over head with a clean offshore wind from the SE, and mid-tides.

For beginners looking to have a go on the inside, high tides are best when the waves are smaller. When the waves are big here it is not a spot for beginers.

Its an easy paddle to get out at Lakey Pipe, just cross the river between the 2 walls and paddle across the channel. To get in, its the same in reverse.

You wont have any trouble finding Lakey Pipe, it is located directly across the channel to the south from Lakey Peak and found right in town.

Hazards to look out for at Lakey Pipe

Lakey pipe gets heavy when it gets bigger, so be sure to check the conditions before you paddle out and surf within your abilities. The reef here is sharp and shallow.
