The Lakey Peak area is one of the best surf destinations in the world. With a handful of consistent world-class waves within only a few kilometres of each other, it’s easy to understand why. Cheap accommodation right on the beach and only a few hours from Bima airport makes it a must-see destination on your Indonesian surf trip.

About Lakey Peak

Lakey Peak is one of the best genuine A-frames in the world, with a left and a right of the same peak. The left is typically the more consistent wand sought-after wave, but the right is world-class also! You will see 2 towers in front of the peak where the judges sit during the many competitions that are held here.

The left breaks on all tides and offers rippable conditions with the odd little barrel, peeling for up to 100m up to 3 ft. When it gets bigger it offers a powerful, hollow barrel section that opens up and lets you travel for af ew seconds before letting you into the channel. The reef can get very shallow on the low tide and is sharp so be aware.

The right needs more tide on it and generally closes out on the lower tides. It offers a barrel right from the start that you need to be behind the peak to get the most out of it. Stay high and tight, as it’s not as wide of a barrel as the left but it is still a great barrel worth your attention.

Best Conditions for Lakey Peak

Lakey Peal breaks in almost all conditions from 1ft to 10ft, all tides and is also very surfable in onshore winds.

The left breaks on all tides and the right needs mid-tides to high tides.

Getting in and out at Lakey Peak

It’s a long paddle around the reef from the beach here to make your way out to Lakey Peak. Typically you will paddle around the reef to the south, in the channel between Lakey Peak and Lakey Pipe. Coming in you can just straighten out over the reef on the higher tides, or paddle around the reef on the lower tides.

Getting to Lakey Peak

Fly to Bima and get a taxi (Can be organised at the airport when you land). You won’t have any trouble finding Lakey Peak, the whole area is literally built around the wave,

Hazards to look out for at Lakey Peak

Crowds and local rippers are something to look out for here. Give locals respect as they share their wave every day with wave-hungry tourists. People can get confused on the peak as to whether they are going right or left of the take-off so be sure to speak up and tell people which way you are going!

The reef is always a hazard here, especially at lower tides.
