Echo Beach and the Canggu region are the centre of surfing on the western coast with a range of breaks and open to more south swell than the beaches found further south. With plenty of places to stay, and even more great places to eat, it draws in the crowds of tourist and expats alike year round. Echo beach hosts a hot spot of quality waves, including Pererenan River-mouth, Echo Beach and Echo Reef.

About Echo Beach

Echo Beach has sand bottom peaks scattered along the beach, in between Echo Reef and Pererenan River-mouth. A strong rip runs out in the southern corner pushing sand out and forming a consistent bank offering rippable, and sometimes barrelling left-handers back towards the beach. The right-hander off this bank runs back into the rip and tends to be fat and short.

The banks here change dramatically with the sand movement and tide, so its worth keeping an eye on it to see what its doing.

Best Conditions for Echo Beach

Echo Beach is offshore from easterly winds through to the north, but prefers the light winds in the early mornings as the dry season trade winds are cross / onshore from the south and the wet season trade winds are cross onshore from the North. It will break from waist high to 1.5x over head and It will break on all tides, depending on the banks and conditions.

Getting in and out at Echo Beach

Access the wave by paddling out in the rip at the south end or making your way out through the shore-break. The rip can make it hard to stay in position at times and constant paddling back to the take-off zone is sometimes needed to keep in the right spot. Crowds are a huge factor here, and it is very rare that you will be surfing here alone.

Getting to Echo Beach

Get to Echo Beach by following Jalan Batu Mejan all the way to the end. You will pass through a ticket booth, with an Rp2000 entry fee per person, find a park anywhere along the road or in the car park at the end. Be sure to hold on to your ticket, as it will give you entry all day. You will see the beach break right in front of the stairs.
