Overview of Location and Area

Batukaras Reef is a lesser-surfed section just outside the main Batukaras Point. While the point is long and mellow, the reef can offer a steeper drop, shorter wall, and occasionally a quick barrel section on lower tides. It’s not a heavy Indo slab by any means — but it’s a solid option for shortboarders who want more than trimming practice.

About Batukaras Reef

The wave breaks over a shallow reef ledge beyond the point. The setup is faster and punchier, with a tighter takeoff zone and less margin for error. On the right tide and swell, it can line up for a few fun hits, though it’s not long or overly consistent. Still, it’s a great change of pace when the point is too soft or packed with soft-tops.

It’s more exposed than the point, so it picks up more swell and wind. It also needs a bit more tide to stay makeable without shutting down on the inside section.

Best Conditions for Batukaras Reef

S to SW swell, 3–6 ft
Mid tide rising is best; low tide can get shallow fast
Cleanest with E–NE winds, typical dry season setup
Best in May–October, though can have windows year-round

Getting in and out at Batukaras Reef

You can either paddle out from the main beach, wrapping around the point, or jump off the rocks on the far side of the bay during mid to high tide. On big swell days, the current can pull you wide, so time your paddle and watch your positioning. Entry is over reef — booties optional but helpful if you’re walking in from the rocks.

Getting to Batukaras Reef

Fly into Jakarta or Yogyakarta, then make your way to Batukaras Village by car, shuttle, or local bus. Once in the village, everything’s walkable or reachable by motorbike. Reef access is the same zone as the point — just paddle further out or use the side trail near the headland.

Hazards to Look Out For at Batukaras Reef

Shallow reef on inside
Slab-like ledge can catch you off guard if the swell jumps
More wind-exposed than the main point
Occasional closeouts if swell angle is too direct
Low tide = less forgiving wipeouts
